How To: Bright Baby Orange Peel Quilt

How To: Bright Baby Orange Peel Quilt

It's no secret that orange peel is my favorite quilt shape. Playing around with ways to arrange these blocks and creative placement of colors creates interesting designs. There's now a two part video series on Color Girl YouTube showing how to make a cute little orange peel quilt. This tutorial takes you through using the Classic Curves Ruler for cutting, piecing the blocks, squaring up and putting it all together.

Today, let's look at how this little quilt looks in black and white! I've figured up fabric requirements for making this striking quilt in two sizes: baby quilt with blocks on point that is featured on the video, and a throw size set straight. You choose your favorite!

Watch the first video, all about cutting and sewing the blocks:  <<click here>>

Watch the second video, which is all about cutting the setting triangles and sewing the blocks on-point into a finished quilt top:  <<click here>>

The baby quilt, when made as shown, finishes 31" x 39" and requires you to make 31 blocks. The blocks finish 6". Please watch the videos before you cut your fabrics.

To cut and sew the quilt as shown in the video you'll need the following fabrics:

bright color solids (all the same or a variety of colors): 1 1/4 yards total

Cut: (15) 7" squares; *16 rectangles 8 1/2" x 4"

black and white prints: 1 3/4 yards total

Cut: (16) 7" squares;  *15 rectangles 8 1/2" x 4"; (5) 9" squares for setting triangles and corners of quilt.

*if using yardage or fat quarters, cut strips 8 1/2" x width of fabric. No need to cut into 4" rectangles.

I thought this design would look really good in black and white, or any other combination of two colors! To give you another option, I am providing the fabric needs to make a throw size quilt with blocks set straight.

This quilt finishes 60" x 72" and requires you to sew 120 blocks. Follow the same instructions for cutting and sewing the blocks that is demonstrated in the video <here>

For this quilt you'll need the following fabrics. Replace the black and/or white with your own favorite if desired:

White fabric: 3 1/2 yards total

Cut: (60) 7" squares; 6 strips 8 1/2" x width of fabric (if using scraps, cut 60 rectangles 8 1/2" x 4")

Black fabric: 3 1/2 yards total

Cut: (60) 7" squares; 6 strips 8 1/2" x width of fabric (if using scraps, cut 60 rectangles 8 1/2" x 4")

I did a little PhotoShop magic to see what the baby quilt looks like in black and white. Here's what it might look like if you replace the colors with shades of gray. I love the dark gray solids with the black and white prints, too!

happy sewing!
