For the Love of Fabric: Happy Home

Earlier this spring, when Art Gallery Fabrics started previewing their new collections for Market in Minneapolis, I knew immediately that I wanted to make a quilt with "Happy Home" by Caroline Hulse (SewCaroline). The colors and prints in this collection are so fresh and bright, and I like the whimsical and hand-drawn look of them: a bit child-like. I was lucky enough to have Art Gallery provide some fabrics for me to make a quilt for a new pattern, and I wanted to share these pretty fabrics as well as some ideas for what you might mix them with from your...

For the Love of Fabric: Flora by Joel Dewberry

"Flora" is designer Joel Dewberry's best collection since Notting Hill a couple of years ago. Flora is his newest release from Free Spirit fabrics, and I was instantly taken with the vivid, pretty colors and the somewhat retro looking prints (loving those tulips!). On closer look, I think it is interesting and a bit unusual because the color ways could really be two distinct collections: the blue/green/salmon prints and the pink, violet, gold prints. I feel like they look good all together, but could easily stand alone (meaning you don't need to buy the whole collection to get a workable...

New Fabric = New Quilt in Progress

A couple of weeks ago Pat Bravo posted on Instagram that she was looking for sewers to create with her new fabric collection, Etno (for Art Gallery Fabrics), and be part of a blog tour to show off the possibilities for the prints. Of course, there were a ton of responses, I didn't think I had a chance...but I was thrilled when I got an email from Pat that I was selected! Hooray for new fabric, right?! So, I wanted to write a quick "W.i.P" Wednesday post today and share a bit about what I have planned for these. But first...the...

For the Love of Fabric: Sun Prints 2015

It will be no surprise to anyone familiar with this blog that I waited with great anticipation for the new 2015 Sun Prints from Alison Glass (Andover Fabrics). Alison Glass is among the very best in the fabric design world when it comes to choosing colors: bright and saturated, but also versatile and modern. I have lots of her previous Sun Prints collection in my stash (from 2013) and I find myself using them in all my quilting projects. Since my taste in quilting and patchwork tends to lean toward the scrappy side, my fabric taste is usually pretty basic....

For the Love of Fabric: Handcrafted by Alison Glass

I have said before that I love everything Alison Glass designs, fabric-wise. So I was naturally really excited about her latest and most-talked-about quilting fabric collection called Handcrafted for Andover Fabrics. *the text print above is also by Alison Glass, part of her 2013 collection "Sun Prints"* Handcrafted is a collection of hand-stamped, batik style fabrics in saturated jewel tone colors. When you see these fabrics in person, you are struck by the richness of the color, but also by the simplicity of the prints. My first thought was to pair them with fabrics of texture. Andover also makes a collection...

Quilt in Progress: Utopia!

Bright, Cheery Colors. Fanciful Prints. The title of this post pretty much sums it up, right? I received a bundle of the new Art Gallery Fabrics collection, Utopia by Frances Newcombe, last week. I decided to make another version of my Star Crossed pattern, using all the bright colors together (and adding more!) just to change up the look from the original Star Crossed Quilt. I do have to say: I am really happy to have the opportunity to sew with these prints. I knew I wanted some as soon as I saw them pop up on websites: those bright colors are...

For the Love of Fabric: “Winged”

For the love of Fabric: that is a huge reason I quilt. There are so many beautiful designs to choose from and one of my favorite parts of the process is deciding what to put to together in my quilts. This involves color, print and texture. The new collection (released over the summer) from Art Gallery Fabrics, Winged, was designed by Bonnie Christine. The first thing that drew me to it was the "prettiness" of the prints with butterflies and flowers, and also the unique way she designed the bird prints. The colors are right up my alley, too,...

From a Quilting Sister, With Love

I got a very interesting package in the mail the other day. It was from FabricWorm, but I hadn't ordered anything....Of course, I opened it and was thrilled to find a copy of Elizabeth Hartman's Aviatrix Medallion pattern! I have wanted to make this quilt since last spring when Elizabeth started a quilt-along with it, but just never made the time. So, who was the sweet one who sent me the pattern? My wonderful sister in quilting (and genetics), Emily! Most know her as Em, and she is an original color girl/courageous quilter! Because this quilt has been on my "to-do" list,...

For the Love of Fabric: Indelible

I first saw a peek of the "Indelible" collection by Katarina Roccella for Art Gallery Fabrics (Spring 2014) last winter in the run-up to spring market. It was pretty much love at first sight and fabric that I happily waited to buy. I am not disappointed! I would really like to start a project with it soon, so I decided to do some experimenting with mixing it with other fabrics in my stash. One of the things that I look for in an ideal fabric collection: distinct color and value ranges. Although I don't make quilts of only one designer...

For the Love of Fabric: Fox Field by Tula Pink

When I attended Camp Stitchalot last June, I was lucky enough to win a fat quarter bundle of Tula Pink's recent collection, "Fox Field". Funny thing, my mom won one, too! Em used some of Mom's bundle to make this sweet baby quilt. It is based on the pattern by Thimbleblossoms. I decided to feature this collection for my "love fabric" post this week, because it, as well as all of Tula's fabrics, contains such unique prints and real artistry. (Tula was at Camp with us, so I was lucky enough to have her sign my bundle). If you are...
