Finished it! Aviatrix Medallion

It's Friday! I am so happy to finally have my Aviatrix Medallion quilt finished. If you have been reading here for a while, you know I spent a ton of time last year working my through all the borders on this. I had lots of fun along the way, adapting the pattern and adding some of my own personal touches. The original pattern is by Elizabeth Hartman. Do you see the birds in the center star piecing? This is such a pretty block, a classic called Dove in the Window. I wanted my center to be larger than the original, so...

Finished Aviatrix Medallion Quilt

I know what you are thinking..."it's about time this quilt top is finished!". I am so happy to finally have my Aviatrix Medallion quilt finished, because it kind of feels like I've been plodding along forever. Medallion quilts are a pretty fun interval project...something to sew on off and on between other quilts  and that is how I have done this: one border at a time, maybe once a month or so. The Aviatrix pattern is by Elizabeth Hartman (buy her patterns Here from Canton Village Quilt Works). I made some changes to the  design to fit my taste, as well as some necessary adjustments to...

Aviatrix Quilt: Starting the Last Border

It is so fun to be working on the very last pieced border of my Aviatrix Medallion quilt! If you have been following along (see other posts, Here), this quilt has been a bit of an adventure as I improvise my way through each border and enjoy these sunny bright colors. Since I did my last border differently from the pattern (I did the rectangular checker pattern instead of log cabin blocks), and the size of my quilt is different from the original quilt pattern, I had to work out a plan for my butterfly blocks. I wanted to do...

Aviatrix Quilt: A Checker Border

I have been back at work on my Aviatrix medallion quilt...and challenging my quilt math skills! After the X and Plus block border, my quilt was kind of an odd size (I haven't followed the pattern exactly), so I had to figure out how to bring it up to size for the next border. The next border on the pattern is the cute log cabin blocks, alternating color and white, and I fully planned on doing that....until things spun all out of control! (-: The problem was that I needed more than a narrow stop border to get the quilt...

Aviatrix Medallion: X and + Border

It seems my sewing time has been short lately, but I really wanted to squeeze in this quick "finish": the X and + block border on my Aviatrix Medallion quilt. I posted previously about how much fun these blocks are and they are really cute all by themselves (you may have seen whole quilts made of these blocks, they are pretty popular for good reason). I decided for this round of the medallion to focus on pink and green alternating for the X and do all the plus shapes in navy blue. I feel like this is a pretty...

Aviatrix Quilt: The Second Border

It took a bit of deciding on how to sew the second border on my Aviatrix Medallion quilt, but in the end I went to with black and blue. **See details on my center star, Here, and the first border, Here** I had to alter the pattern again for this border in order to keep my measurements workable. My second border, with the row of blue squares, is actually meant to be the border after the X and Plus blocks, but I reversed them and put the row of squares on first. I really like how the darker blue in...

Aviatrix Medallion Quilt: the first border

It was fun last week to get back to my Aviatrix Medallion and add the first border. If you are familiar with the pattern, you can tell I have altered mine a bit to fit my taste. I made the center star larger, so I skipped the actual first border, which is half-square triangles. Since I have lots of greenish blue in my center star, I decided to turn up the heat in the first border by using mostly hot pink and orange strips. I like how the bits of yellow, green and blue pop amidst the brightness and pull...

Aviatrix Quilt: the Center Star

I did it! I finally finished my center star for the Aviatrix medallion quilt. I have to say I really love it, is it okay to say that about your own quilt? I really love making medallion quilts (so far I've done the Marcelle Medallion and Midnight at the Oasis). This pattern is called Aviatrix Medallion and was created by Elizabeth Hartman. (you can buy the pattern here and see how the original looks). Now, I do  have some explaining to do because if you are familiar with the pattern, you know mine looks different. While I love the original quilt, I...

From a Quilting Sister, With Love

I got a very interesting package in the mail the other day. It was from FabricWorm, but I hadn't ordered anything....Of course, I opened it and was thrilled to find a copy of Elizabeth Hartman's Aviatrix Medallion pattern! I have wanted to make this quilt since last spring when Elizabeth started a quilt-along with it, but just never made the time. So, who was the sweet one who sent me the pattern? My wonderful sister in quilting (and genetics), Emily! Most know her as Em, and she is an original color girl/courageous quilter! Because this quilt has been on my "to-do" list,...
