Quilting On the Road and Thankful

It's the last week of November, and in the U.S. that means it's Thanksgiving holiday and the shotgun start of Christmas shopping. I am so happy that I was able to celebrate the holiday with my sister and her family. My mother was also there, so we have had some wonderful "girl" time sewing and shopping. The quilt above is one my mom made from my pattern, "After the Rain", from Modern Patchwork magazine, spring 2014. It is on the guest room at my sister's home. For my sewing project this weekend, I brought along a selection of favorites from my...

On the Road: the Colors of Hawaii

As November comes to a close, there is good news here at Color Girl Quilts. I had the wonderful opportunity to spend the week of Thanksgiving with my family in Hawaii, on the Big Island. This is our favorite  vacation: something for both kids and parents as we all enjoy the scenery, weather, and especially snorkeling. The colors there are so unique...from the black lava landscape dotted with dried grass on the arid side of the island, to the lush tropical forests that we usually associate with Hawaii. This is the first time we visited at this time of year...I...

How I Spent My Summer Vacation

I hope you don't mind indulging me in a bit of a more personal post. Today is the last Sunday of my summer "vacation". My kids went back to school last week, but I start this Tuesday...I was accepted to the design (visual communications) first year course study at Ohio State. While I am super excited by all that I will surely learn, it's kind of scary, too. This has been probably the most wonderful summer of my recent memory, and the experience has taught me a great lesson. More on that in a minute. My family and I had the...

Sewtopia! A Heavenly Retreat

First: a winner for this week's giveaway, a summer 2014 copy of Modern Patchwork, comment #18 was Barbara Woods! hooray! Thanks for reading my blog, all. There will be lots more giveaways now through the holidays, so visit often. Last weekend I had the wonderful opportunity to go the first ever Sewtopia sewing and quilting retreat in Salt Lake City. I cannot even imagine the effort it must take to organize an event like this, but it was absolutely perfect! I am lucky that my mom happens to live in SLC, so I flew out a day before Sewtopia started...

On the Road: Portland Quilt, inc. MQX Festival

What a thrill! Last week I had the opportunity to go to Portland with my mom, sister, brother and his girlfriend...a road trip to see my quilts displayed at the Quilt! Knit! Stitch! festival by MQX and Quilts, inc. I am so lucky to have such a supportive and fun-loving family (my poor little brother has been dragged to quilt shops and sewing events his whole life and still tolerates us girls!) My Twirling Fans quilt and my Polka Dot Bikini Quilt (both quilted by Jenny of Sew Kind of Wonderful) were invited to participate in a special exhibit on...

Taking it on the Road: the Islands

My family and I just returned from a fantastic trip to the Big Island of Hawaii. It is our favorite place to vacation and this year was really special: my boys went snorkeling for the first time! It is really amazing as a parent when your child reaches a stage to experience something brand new, especially when you can share something you really love and do it together. In the photo above, I am at a small quilt and gift shop in the town of Volcano. We ate lunch there before driving through the national park and looking at the...
