A big finish!

My Fans!Hi, there! Hope everyone had a great weekend. I am super excited to show you my finished fan quilt top! Those borders were a bear and slowed me down a bit, but so worth it, I love it. I have wanted to do a border like this on a quilt for a long time. I just pieced scraps from the fans into four-patches and strips and added some larger squares and rectangles of prints that coordinate. I absolutely love this fabric collection. Some are from a line called "long live vintage" by AdornIt, some are various Sweetwater collections, and...

Where did this week go?

I hate to go for so long without a chat...but sometimes civilian jobs and family get busy! This week has been a little nuts and I am sad I haven't finished my fan quilt yet. Maybe this weekend. But,I did teach my NY Beauty Class today and had a grand time! it was a great, independent group of ladies. I always seem to learn something from them as well. Here are my pieces so far...The block on the right is all stitched down to the background. I decided to use the gray ombre solid from the new collection "simply color"...

Quilt Bomb

Faux Crazy QuiltI was walking down the hallway at my sons' school and, out of the corner of my eye, spotted a huge crazy quilt hanging on the wall! what?!Upon closer inspection, I discovered this crazy quilt is made of paper by second graders. You see, the students were learning about Victorian Era crazy quilts and how they were made. The students made this "quilt" with millions of pretty patterned paper and then drew on the fancy "stitches" connecting the pieces. It has been hanging in the hallway for a bit now, and I smile every time I walk by....

Stashing “color”: it’s finally here!

Fabrics...and Flowers...I have been so excited for the new collection "simply color" from Moda...and it has finally arrived at my quilt shop!! Of course, I had already ordered a layer cake because I just couldn't wait! These fabrics are soooo pretty and they have coordinating ombre solids, which I am excited to experiment with. I did pick up some those at the shop. These paperwhites are growing in a plastic picnic cup, the beautiful result of a first grade science project: forcing bulbs and observing how they change as the plant grows. My little professor brought this home on Monday...

An accidental quilt!

So, I have been working on sewing up the patchworky border pieces for my fan quilt, and guess what? I think they make a cute quilt all by themselves!I might make a "leftovers" quilt with my scraps. That would help reduce the amount of fabric that has to be absorbed into my stash  (- :Thanksgiving Break started early for my kids, so we spent the morning doing a bit of shopping, and naturally we ended up at the Quilt Shop.I feel pretty lucky that my kids actually like my hobbies, too. They love to go to the quilt shop...

More flowers, Less fabric

a couple of weeks ago I became the design/build arm of my homeowners' association landscaping committee (which consists of me and one other person, who doesn't actually "do" gardening). So, my excuse for not having much in the way of sewing to share is that I have been trying to take advantage of nice weather and nursery sales to plant shrubs and rearrange some perennials.Since my garden is more or less full (although, like fabric, there is always room for more really great plants), I am excited at the prospect of overhauling the flower beds in my neighborhood. But, today...

Out to Lunch

November CompassMy brain was out to lunch as I was sewing on this today. See those dark blue pieces? I cut them the wrong size but didn't realize it until I had sewn on all four and ironed them and was getting ready to  sew the next piece! out came the seam ripper, which is not fun at all with foundation piecing.Once I overcame that setback, I sewed the next pieces on, which were the green/gold pieces of the inner pinwheel. Guess what? I had them positioned wrong. All. four. of. them.I made good friends with my seam ripper...

Fill in the blank…

There is a column in last month's issue of Martha Stewart Living magazine that discusses the positive effects of hobbies and crafts on our mood. I bet we can all identify with that, right?I think this sign is fun...if you could remove the word "bike", what would you replace it with? Here are my substitutions:"sewing machine"/ "fabric"/ "quilting book""plant for my garden""caramel""pet""pretty underwear" (right? you were all thinking it, but didn't dare say it)My mom likes to ask "what would we do without our hobbies?"See you tomorrow for W.I.P. Wednesday,SharonGuess What!? this is my 50th post. wow! it has been...
