Rise Above: Sew Along Progress

It has been a super fun first six weeks of the Rise Above sewalong (how did we get to six weeks already?!). I wanted to pop in to share some progress. Everyone in the group is doing an amazing job of sewing the ‘homework’ for each week. I think it’s motivating to have the video demonstrations to see exactly how the cutting and piecing go in a visual way you just don’t get from a printed pattern.

I’ve sure loved seeing all the ways participants have turned the Rise Above pattern into their own unique quilt with colors, fabrics and creative layout variations. You know I can’t resist playing with a pattern. The videos feature ideas on variations, short cuts, and creative ways to have fun with the design.

So! You’ve all seen the original quilt from the pattern cover, and I’ve probably waaaaay over shared the floral version I made for the demonstrations and promotions. How about a completely different look?

I am sewing along with the weekly sections of the sew along, making a new version completely different from my last one and from the pattern. For this, I’m using fabrics from the Breaking News collection by Windham Fabrics. The entire collection is available in the shop, here. I am so loving these primary colors and basic prints. There are also several other coordinating prints from the shop that round out the palette and add more interest. Alison Glass prints are particularly good with the Breaking News fabrics.

And…fussy cutting! Not my usual, but I couldn’t resist with these text prints. Last week, we made eight churn dash blocks. They are cute in a maximum scrappy look: two prints for the “frame” and text squares for the centers (-:

One of my favorite things about this quilt, and other medallions and sampler styles, is the unlimited possibilities in color and fabric choice. You could do everything from making your churn dash blocks in just two fabrics, all eight alike, making each one in nine different scraps and all different, or anything in between!

Now we are on week 7, making eight-pointed stars that alternate with the churn dash blocks to make one border of the medallion. For my floral version, I did the stars in all one print. The pattern has them with contrasting centers and star points. How will we make them this time?

The sew along is still open to join. All are welcome to sign up at any time. You can catch up or just sew at your own pace with the videos and pattern to help each step of the way. Learn all about the program <<here>>. You’ll get all the videos, helpful handouts, and membership in the social sharing group no matter when you join.

As we get further along and start to sew up the tops, I’ll share some of the beautiful projects by those in the group. They are impressive!
