We all love a star quilt, right? It’s such a classic patchwork design and super versatile.
I’ve always liked the four pointed star patterns (Pine Burr is a favorite), so I was excited to find a ruler that is specifically designed for cutting the shapes! The Kitty Cornered ruler is from Creative Grids. I couldn’t resist playing around with it a bit to sew a baby boy quilt and show off some super cute fabrics from Moda Fabrics.
…The best part is, I also made a video to show you how the Kitty Cornered Ruler works and how to make a quilt like mine. Like my others, this video includes ideas for making your blocks in different color schemes and getting different looks by rearranging the colors. This is such a fun little building block, you’ll be amazed at all the possibilities!

My quilt started with sets of 10″ precut squares of the Quotation and Animal Crackers fabrics by Moda Fabrics. These are such cute, cheerfully colored basic prints in yellow, green, red, orange and bits of baby blue. I love that the collections include some black and white prints, too. This combination creates really nice contrast for a modern, graphic quilt. Such a perfect mix for a baby quilt (especially f0r a boy!).
I put together a bundle of fabrics like I used that you can get for your own quilt. The bundle fabrics are also available in yardage.

The quilt I made started with a 4″ kitty corner unit. Four of those became the full star block. The Kitty Cornered Ruler has markings and measurements for making the blocks in 11 different sizes. It’s very well designed with steps and cutting marks clearly indicated. It also has the squaring up marks so you can use it for making the block start to finish. I am excited to try it out by incorporating the shape into other quilt designs!
Quilty stats: fabrics are primarily from the Quotation line by Zen Chic for Moda (find them here), binding fabric is black and white stripe by Tula Pink (find it here), black fabric is Essex linen by Robert Kaufman. The batting is Hobbs heirloom cotton with quilting by Mandy Leins. That cute backing fabric with the cars (see top photo) is by Art Gallery Fabrics (find it here).
Wahoo, a finished quilt! I hope you find this one as sweet as I do. I had a great time sewing it and showing you how to make one too. Be sure and check out the video and pick up your own Kitty Cornered Ruler.

I love your binding choices. Beautiful quilt! Well done!
Would love to know how you sew the blocks together when having twelve points coming together. I struggle with anything more than eight points…..can’t seem to get them flat enough, or they seem bulking and won’t lay/lie flat. Thanks.
