It’s that time of the year! Have you chosen a color of the year for your personal creative works? I always wonder how much the color of the year chosen by groups like Pantone affect what quilters make…I don’t think it does for me other than being aware of challenges and perhaps events surrounding making with the chosen color.
I DO like to see what Kona Cotton chooses for their yearly color because, it’s fabric! and that means there are quilts! I have a link below for a free quilt pattern featuring this year’s color if you’d like to try it out.
This year’s Kona color is called Horizon. It is a dreamy sky blue with a slight periwinkle slant. It’s closer to baby blue than aqua, and hangs with blues on the purple side rather than the green side of the blue spectrum. In the photo above, I’ve put it with some other bolts in the shop to give you an idea how it compares to other shades of blue and violet as well as gold and peachy pink shades. I love this selection!
Every year, Robert Kaufman, the company that makes Kona Cotton solids, releases some patterns featuring the color of the year and that is where we quilters benefit! While the patterns always feature only solid color fabrics with the COTY, nothing says you can’t make them with coordinating prints instead of the solids.
My style would dictate using a combination of prints and solids. You could use Horizon as the primary ‘neutral’ with a selection of prints in all the other positions of the quilt, or you could use Horizon with other solids…I suggest green and yellow, or pink and gray, and coordinating prints. It’s a really versatile color. In the photo above, I’ve put it together with yellow and green solids, plus a selection of Tilda Fabrics prints. Isn’t this a sweet group? Would make a great quilt for a beach cottage or baby quilt.
If you want to try using Horizon in a quilt, you can get your yardage, Here, and all the coordinating fabrics you might need, Here.
The quilt above was designed by Ariga Mahmoudlou and is a free pattern provided by Robert Kaufman. <<Download it here>>
Now I’m in the mood to make up a quilt with Horizon and Tilda fabrics for a little breathe of springtime in my life!
Happy sewing!

I never realized there is a color of the year thing going on within the boutique/high end quilt fabric industry. The Kona Horizon is a lovely color. Thanks for enlightening me!
