It’s here! The traditional and forever favorite Dresden plate is frequently on quilters’ must-make list. I’m super proud of the latest video to hit Color Girl YouTube that’s all about how to sew these classic quilt blocks.
In this tutorial, I’ll teach you how to cut your Dresden wedge shapes using the EZ Dresden ruler. It is SUCH a handy tool! Use it to cut Dresden and tumbler shapes from 1″ to 8″ (every 1/2″ in between). It’s one of my top three most-used specialty rulers. <<get the EZ Dresden ruler here>>
In this video, you’ll also learn to sew the wedges, including the finished points and creating the completed “plate”, then appliqué it to the background fabric square. You’ll love this *easy* sewing machine appliqué technique and can apply it to other projects with machine appliqué.
The original pattern for this particular Dresden plate block is part of the 2020 Stitch Pink Sampler sponsored by Moda Fabrics. It is a free download, <<found here>>. For the video tutorial, I have skipped the center circle appliqué and instead turned the inside edge of the plate to allow the background fabric to show in the center. With this appliqué technique, all the fabric edges are turned/finished, not raw.
I hope you love making these cute blocks as much as I do! Be sure and share, I’d love to see what you make.
Be well my friends, and happy sewing!

I started a t-shirt quilt for myself two years ago and would love to finally get it finished. I also love the idea of the quilt which you have shared in your blog. My daughter is going in her schools and she asked me to make a quilt like this. Your blog helped me.
