Last week I showed you the beginnings of this cute little quilt and now I have it finished! My first finished top of 2017.
I started with a layer cake (10″ squares) of the Aubade Song to Dawn collection from Moda Fabrics. This is an entire collection of basic prints in only blue and white and gray. I wanted to try some very small curved orange peel shapes, keeping the center fabric in tact.
I decided for the start of this year to work on a series of small quilts. This is partly due to a larger project I am working on and that I just have so many ideas that I am getting impatient (0: I just want to MAKE ALL THE QUILTS! So, in order to satisfy my creative urge, I am concentrating on small quilts, but challenging myself with experimentation with shape, size and design.
This little quilt is about 31″ square and the curves for the orange peel shapes are 4 1/2″. That is by far the smallest curve I have pieced…and it feels mighty exciting! At first I had planned on placing the dark blue squares with the lighter pod shapes in each corner right next to each other. But when I sewed several together, I didn’t like the look of it. I decided to add the sashing with little navy blue corners, and I think it adds a lot to the design.
Besides those small curves, this quilt is different for me due to the limited color palette. Were you thinking, “this is not Color Girl style at all!” ? It does lack my usual bright splash of color but I really love how classic the blue and white looks. I admit I was super tempted to make those corner squares bright orange…
Hope 2017 is off to a good start for everyone! Happy Sewing,
