A couple weeks ago I showed you my little Flowering Snowball quilt in progress…I was experimenting with how to make the block without using the usual templates. It worked out, but my blocks were a teeny bit wonky so I had to add sashing to square them up a bit. WELL! This little top is finished and I love it! It’s so imperfect, yet so lovable….with all those cheery colors and prints. I am loving this sunny little quilt in this gray month of the year.
I am happy with the decision to add the sashing. Not only did it allow me to sew the blocks together and have them not look disjointed, but I like how the white breaks up the loud prints and looks nice and clean. The black squares tie back to the black in the blocks, so I think it looks like my little “fix” was intentional rather than an afterthought.
So, if you ever find yourself with imperfect quilt blocks, maybe they didn’t turn out all the same size, or some are pretty crooked, sashing is a way to square them all up. Cut the sashing wide enough to start with so that you can trim as needed to make up for the difference in block sizes.
I have been sewing so much lately (yahoo!), but I have not kept up on binding finished quilts. So that’s definitely on the agenda this week. My absolute favorite is striped binding! I picked up this great little black and white stripe at a Christmas sale and it is perfect for two of my quilts right now, so that is a bonus. So, before I start new stuff: Binding. **need to learn how to bind? Here’s my tutorial**
And once I catch up on my binding: something all new, and so so colorful. Have you seen the “What Shade Are You” quilts on Instagram and at RJR fabrics? Well, I am lucky enough to have the opportunity to design and make one with this pretty stack. Here’s the thing, though: I have never made a quilt with only solid color fabrics. Can I do it? I tried once (this quilt) but couldn’t resist adding polka dots. I am super excited for what I have planned for this, though, so I will share once I get it in progress.
But now: all those quilts that need binding are calling to me….
