It seems I have waited a long time to share this quilt! I am extra happy that it is my first quilt in the UK magazine, Love Patchwork and Quilting issue 42. The magazine is now available in the UK and digitally, and we will have it in the U.S. in January.
I am calling this quilt Lava Beach because I made it last summer right after my family and I had a trip to the Big Island of Hawaii. One of our favorite spots on that island is a black lava sand beach where the kids play in the surf and we love snorkeling. I love how this quilt showcases some of my favorite bright prints against the black, white and gray graphic background, just like a lava rock-covered tropical island!
You all know I love curved piecing, but my favorite shape has to be the orange peel. This is a classic quilt pattern and there are so many ways to make it modern! For Lava Beach, you piece the black and white units then sew them to the curved pieces. The graphic pattern comes from the way the blocks are arranged.
The black, white and gray fabrics are all Indah batiks from Hoffman Fabrics, and I used Aurifil thread for piecing and Hobbs batting to finish the quilt. The quilting is a horizontal wavy line pattern by the lovely Darby at Quilted Squid.
I haven’t received the quilt back yet, or my copy of the magazine, but I can’t wait! I hope you will make your own version of Lava Beach in your favorite colors. If you don’t have access to the magazine, I will offer an individual pattern in 2017.
One more week until Christmas! Hope you, my friends, are safe and healthy around the world, and may these next weeks be filled with goodwill, peace, family, and a determination to be the best we can be in 2017.
