The Year That Was 2016, and More

Summer Bloom quilt pattern by Sharon McConnell with Art Gallery Fabrics

2016 has sure been a busy year here at Color Girl quilts! Looking back I feel really happy with what I have accomplished both personally and as a quilt artist and feel so excited about what 2017 has in store.

Although 2016 was good in so many ways, there was also disappointment and stress, hard work and loss. I had experiences this year that changed the way I view the world and life. I have thought a lot about what I want to write here, saying good bye to another year and looking forward to the new. I will say that I feel extremely blessed in every way and grateful for each day I have with my family. 2016 presented challenges, but so much good as well.

The quilting world has been such a wonderful outlet for me to express my creativity and share my love of color, fabric and design. I thank you readers here on my blog and the friends I have made on Instagram. Although I haven’t met many of you in person, I have come to value your friendship so greatly!

Some of my proudest accomplishments in 2016 are publishing for the first time in Quilts and More and Love Patchwork and Quilting, two magazines I admire and am honored to be a part of. It makes me endlessly pleased to see other quilters make with my patterns…seeing your creations totally makes my day! I have so many things already lined up for 2017…I cannot wait to see what you all will make with me!

Some other highlights (aka, the Christmas card version): My favorite finished quilt this year is Summer Bloom (top photo). I love everything about it from the fabrics (gorgeous prints from Art Gallery Fabrics) to design and making it, to the finish.

My “color of the year” was black. I discovered a love for it about half way through the year, and it seemed to appear in nearly all my quilts in the latter part of 2016. I love the way it makes colors so bright and the classic contrast with white.

Other favorites: the Hexagon shape and it’s infinite possibilities for patchwork (Trillium quilt, below), Curved Piecing all the time, going to Quilt Market in Salt Lake City in May, teaching at a local quilt shop.

This has been an exciting year getting Color Girl out into the world more, with quilt shop trunk shows and expanding my sales of patterns wholesale to stores. One of my goals for 2017 is to do more teaching and a few video demos (You-Tube, here I come! *scared to death*).

I have really big plans for 2017…I cannot wait to share what I’m up to! It’s kind of scary to make big jumps, but really exciting as well. I plan to do better at sending out news, offers and good stuff, so be sure and sign up for my email list (see sidebar or home page to sign up).

Big thanks for my creative friends new and old, and cheers to a happy, healthy 2017. Prayers for peace, hope and goodwill for all.

I love comments! thanks for stopping by.
