Finished it! Aviatrix Medallion

Aviatrix medallion quilt by Sharon McConnell

It’s Friday! I am so happy to finally have my Aviatrix Medallion quilt finished. If you have been reading here for a while, you know I spent a ton of time last year working my through all the borders on this. I had lots of fun along the way, adapting the pattern and adding some of my own personal touches. The original pattern is by Elizabeth Hartman.

Do you see the birds in the center star piecing? This is such a pretty block, a classic called Dove in the Window. I wanted my center to be larger than the original, so I added the radiating blue/green chevrons. My friend Jane Williams did an incredible job with the long arm quilting, adding so much texture and interest throughout. See my past post on that center star block, Here.

I have said before how much fun medallion quilts are because each new border is like a brand new quilt project. It is fun to choose fabrics and plan your piecing for each round. That checker border just inside the last butterfly border gave me some headaches with getting the measurements right, but I love how it looks. If you look really closely, the white/cream fabrics are actually different, a fun detail you only notice on close inspection. You can read more about this as work in progress, Here and Here.

I used Hobbs batting and Aurifil thread for my piecing. Many of the fabrics are from Moda…I took a lot of color inspiration from a bundle of Vanessa Christensen’s prints.

This quilt was a blast to make, and so pretty finished. The colors and prints are so cheerful! I owe my mom a huge Thank You for doing the binding for me. She has been here visiting and helping with the kids while I am at school this month…So grateful for the sewing time we have shared and the incredible amount of support she has given me.
