Super Simple Sampler Block #18

how to sew Super Simple Sampler six inch modern quilt block with flying geese

Welcome to the second post of our January Super Simple Sampler block series! This month the theme is flying geese, you can see the tutorial for the first block, Here. If you are making a quilt with lots of flying geese units, you might like my quick tutorial on my favorite method for chain piecing flying geese blocks. Click Here to see it.

Today, the block is kind of fun because the flying geese are not as obvious…as part of the whole block you see a star rather than the four flying geese. Let’s make it!

Cutting

From the blue: cut (4) 3 1/2″ x 2″ rectangles; (4) 2″ squares

from the black/white: cut (4) 2″ squares

from each of the yellow and pink: cut (2) 3 1/2″ x 2″ rectangles

Sewing

1. Place a blue 2″ square right sides facing, over one end of a yellow rectangle. Fold the blue square in half on diagonal and finger press to crease.

2. Using the crease as a guide, sew across the diagonal of the square as shown below.

5. Follow the same steps to add the black and white square to the other side of each yellow and pink rectangle. Ensure proper placement so that the geese are all pointed the same direction, eg. when the “goose” is pointing up, the right side triangle is black/white and the left is blue. See photo below for orientation.
