Kona Solids: Polka Dot Bikini Quilt

Welcome to my stop on the Stash Fabrics Kona cottons quilt blog tour! Beth at Stash organized a group of quilters to pick out their favorite bundle of colors from her stock of Kona solids, then let us dream up a sewing project with them. Beth carries the entire collection of Kona solids, over 300 different colors!

It seemed like a no-brainer to make my pretty bundle into a Polka Dot Bikini quilt, and with that in mind, I chose a variety of bright colors, including at least one light and one dark of each. Of course, once I got to sewing, I couldn’t resist adding some prints to spice it all up. The polka dot fabrics I included in my quilt are mostly Ta Dot by Michael Miller Fabrics, which Beth also carries a fantastic selection of!

One of the hardest things about shopping for fabric online is that usually you only get to see one print at a time. Stash Fabrics has a really fun feature, Design Wall, which allows you to choose your favorite fabrics and then look at them all together before you buy.

I did this when choosing my solids…went through the entire stock and pinned my favorites to the Design Wall. Then I could go back and move them around, place colors next to each other and see the entire group, eliminating some or adding where I needed more of a certain color or value. It made it so much easier to choose a group that I liked together!

What a brilliant use of these solids and dots! This is one of the most fun quilts I’ve seen in a long time. I don’t usually order too much fabric online, but the design wall feature you mentioned may convince me to give it a try. In the past I haven’t felt confident building a palette without seeing the fabrics together

Thanks for everything Sharon! Your palette has been very popular. Your patterns are coming soon to Stash Fabrics! Excited! 🙂

Oh my goodness, that quilt is just amazing!! Reading Beth’s comment (above), do you have a bundle at Stash that includes the fabrics that you used in this quilt? YOu need to sell the pattern with the kit: it’s a total winner!! Hugs, H in HEaldsburg

What size is the smaller version?

  6. Katherine Christenson says:

love the whole look of this quilt. Now big question: what did you use for batting to get that definition in the quilting.

    1. Sharon says:

      Hi, Katherine,
I used Hobbs Heirloom batting. The great texture on this one is from using two layers of batting. The quilting was done by Darby Myers of Quilted Squid.

I love comments! thanks for stopping by.
