Quilt in Progress: Polka Dot Bikini, the “mini”

Polka Dot Bikini Quilt by Sharon McConnell

I mentioned last week that I am using my Kona solids bundle from Stash Fabrics to make a small version of my Polka Dot Bikini Quilt. This project has pretty much taken all my sewing time this week, and I am really loving how it is coming along. I initially planned to make it with only the solid fabrics, but just couldn’t do it! I had to add some bright prints…and of course the polka dots made sense. I am trying to create a good mix and balance between the dot fabrics and the solids, but keep the overall focus on the color.

I sewed up the center blocks, creating the purple circle and realized this would make a cool center for a medallion quilt. It might be fun to work on building something up around this, continuing  those triangle/square corner pieces and adding borders. That is for another day…

Cleo has been helping a bit, mostly trying to entice me to go outside with her, not so much out of interest in the quilt, though. I love it when she keeps me company while I sew, and she almost always lays on the floor next to me while I am sitting at the computer. She turned ten years old earlier this month, but is still very young at heart and attitude.

This quilt has taught me something: I don’t often make the same pattern twice (let alone three, which this is my third Bikini quilt), but I have especially enjoyed making this quilt top…I don’t know if it’s the colors, the curved piecing (which I love), or that it is going together so much quicker than I expected. Whatever the reason, this week has been all about why I love quilting: getting excited to sew, loving each step of the way, and creating something beautiful.

I love this quilt! the shapes ,the colors, the dog! To make it a “mini” are you just making fewer blocks or are you scaling the size of the pieces down? I have your Pattern but I prefer to do the “mini” size. What am I missing?
    Thank you!
