Super Simple Sampler Block #2

Super simple modern Sampler quilt, cross block tutorial, color girl quilts by sharon mcconnell

Welcome to block #2 of the Super Simple Sampler 6″ series. As part of my book club this year, I am sharing instructions to make blocks that will eventually become a sampler quilt. This month is cross blocks. You can see how to make block #1 Here, and read about this year’s Book Club series Here.

Cutting

yellow print: cut 2 squares 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″;  2 squares 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″; 2 rectangles 2 1/2″ x 1 1/2″; two rectangles 3 1/2″ x 1 1/2″

blue print: cut 1 rectangle  2 1/2″ x 1 1/2″; 1 square 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″

white print: cut the same as for the blue above.

Sewing

1. sew one white print (1 1/2″) square to one yellow (1 1/2″) square. press.

2. sew one blue print (1 1/2″) square to the second yellow (1 1/2″) square. press.

3. Sew the blue (1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″) rectangle to the blue/yellow unit made in step 2. press.

4. Sew the white (1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″) rectangle to the white/yellow unit made in step 1. press.

5. Sew the yellow (3 1/2″ x 1 1/2″) rectangle to the blue/yellow unit from step 3. Orient it as shown in the photo above, so that it is adjacent to the center square. Press. This unit should measure 3 1/2″ square.

6. repeat step 5 to add the second yellow (3 1/2″ x 1 1/2″) rectangle to the white/yellow unit. Press.

7. Arrange fabric pieces as shown in photo above. Sew one yellow (3 1/2″) square to the blue/yellow unit. press.

8. Sew the second yellow (3 1/2″) square to the white/yellow unit. press.

9. Sew the two halves of the block together at the center so that the white and blue shapes are diagonally from each other. Press.

This is kind of a quirky rendition of a cross block, but I think it’s sweet. It would be a fun one to make multiples of for a quilt: you could make it a bit bigger and use charm squares in place of the 3 1/2″ alternating squares and it would really show off a favorite collection of prints.

Happy Sewing!

Sharon

This is a super fun rendition of a cross block. I love the fabric you used for the 3.5″ squares, it pulls in the aqua of the upper right quadrant really well!

I love comments! thanks for stopping by.
