Weekend Work in Progress: Mini Marcelle

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I was scheduled to teach a class on the Marcelle Medallion at my local quilt shop. I didn’t want to make another full size quilt, so I decided to make it in miniature for my class demonstrations.

I have made the center star and sawtooth border…all in half the scale of the original. My center star is 8″ and those little triangles in the first border are 3/4″. How about some cuteness? For fabrics, I used charm squares of ‘Happy Tones’ prints.

at this point, my mini is at 11 1/2″ and next up are the flying geese…which I started cutting and they are not big at all.

I wanted to share a technique I use when sewing narrow strips to quilt blocks or borders, to keep them from getting wavy and uneven. It’s simple and maybe everyone already does this, but…

for any strip that finishes less than 1 1/2″, I add about 1/4″ to the cutting measurement (in this case, it is wider than that because I thought the green borders were going to be wider, but later decided I wanted them even narrower).
Once the extra-wide strips are sewn in place, I trim them down to the size I want them.

I know this kind of seems like “obviously!”, but it really can make a huge difference in the end accuracy of your pieced quilt. Trimming the strips down after they are sewn on allows you to control the exact width and account for inconsistency in seam allowance, avoid the waviness that often happens when sewing narrow strips, and allows for perfectly squared corners.

Using this technique, you can add strips as tiny as 1/4″ and they turn out perfectly.
