I haven’t done a flashback post in a while, so tonight I want to share a quilt I finished in 2007. I love how the creation of a quilt helps me remember certain times in my life, they all have some association for me.
This quilt was a collaboration. I found the appliqué blocks in a pattern by Hopscotch Quilts, but I wanted to create my own design around them.
Since I didn’t appliqué then (still don’t), I recruited my mom to sew the appliqué blocks while I did the piecing.
This quilt holds a happy memory for me as I worked on it right after I had my first baby (now seven). I was living in Salt Lake City and a local shop had open sewing on Thursday nights. My mom and I and my baby son would go to the shop on Thursdays, we were always the only ones there with the owner. It always seemed like she was a bit mystified as to why we came, but we liked the time to sew and visit, and got to be friends with her, too.
Over the course of that winter, I sewed on this quilt, and my baby grew.
When we started our Thursday outings, he was three months old, and while this quilt took shape, he went from sleeping in his carseat, to playing in his stroller, to being able to sit up on the floor and scoot around. (I was not a fast sewer then, and I am not now).
Those Thursday nights were quality time with my mom that winter, which I am grateful for since we moved across the country a few months later. This quilt is a tangible reminder of a really happy period of my life as a new mom.
Have a great week!
Sharon
What a beautiful post.
I love this quilt it’s beautiful! But I bet even if it wasn’t a masterpiece you would love it due to the happy memories. Thanks for the inspiration!
Wonderful story, Sharon! And a great quilt too. All that spring green — definitely a quilt of new beginnings!
It’s a beautiful quilt and a beautiful story and memories to go with it.

Lovely quilt and beautiful memories of time spent with your mum and newborn. Priceless
Oh, this is why we quilt! The inspiration from one block, then the creative process to add to the design, and the lovely memories of life as we sew and quilt our project….misty-eyed as I read your wonderful story. I’m so glad you shared a flashback post!
