Bikini QAL: a pattern tip

Here today with a good tip for those making the Polka Dot Bikini Quilt with me. I want to share a pointer on cutting the arcs that form the “sashing” around the pod shape.

Once you have sewn the first two curves (steps 5-9)  that set the “P” shape inside your gray square, you must square up that unit to 8 1/2″ square. This will help you accurately cut the gray pieces for the next step. **in my block example, I replaced one gray piece with a yellow one, but I am still at the same stage**

Prior to cutting for step 10
To square the unit: using a ruler that is greater than 8 1/2″ square, place the corner of the ruler over the G1 fabric (gray in photo). Line up the two 7 1/2″ markings at the point where the two fabrics meet. See the photo above.

Use rotary cutter to trim G1 (gray in photo) fabric to this size.
Rotate the block and line up the corner you just cut with the 8 1/2″ lines of the ruler. Trim the G2 fabric (yellow in photo). This should result in an 8 1/2″ square with a printed pod shape in the center.

Continue with cutting as shown in step 10 of the pattern.
Sew the first solid fabric template A shape in place, resulting in unit below:

then cut the G2 (gray fabric) using your B template (step 13):

…and sew your second solid piece in place.
See you next week for our first link up! don’t forget to share your progress on Instagram or flickr…and don’t hesitate to ask questions, that is why we Quilt Along together!
