Flowers, Midnight at the Oasis QAL

Midnight at the Oasis: some pattern tips

Happy Tuesday! Has anyone obtained the Midnight at the Oasis pattern for our sew-along?

My mom is doing it with us and has already finished the center medallion, I wanted to share just in case it got anybody excited to sew with us….

pretty great, huh? she is doing hers very scrappy with lots of bright colors and black and white. She hand-pieced the center triangle units and was kind enough to show me how she does it, so I plan to post a tutorial on hand-piecing in case that appeals to any other quilters.

I am paper piecing mine, so will also be posting instructions on doing it that way. One of the things that intimidated me about this pattern is the appliqué borders, especially the second one with the flowers and vines. I have some ideas for alternatives to the appliqué, so if that is holding you back, too, maybe you will like my suggestions….so I hope you join us!

**I have an important heads up to anyone planning to make this quilt with us:

the pattern is a tad confusing when it comes to measurements. Be aware that the instructions (in writing)  DO include seam allowance measurements, while the pictures/diagrams DO NOT include seam allowance. For someone who only looks at pictures, like me, be careful! I might have been forced to do some improvising on my center triangles….

I started the process of putting my garden to bed for the winter today, but there are still some beauties going strong (Pretty Lady Diana Anemone, above).

While I did some trimming and clean-up, my mom helped by planting 200 (!) crocus bulbs. Talk about a fun, beautiful day. I am so excited to see them all bloom next spring.

These irises have been blooming the past week or so. They are re-bloomers I planted last spring….kind of shocking to see Irises in October, they are so beautiful and smell just as good.

I hope it is beautiful wherever you are!

  1. I got my pattern via Quilt Mania magazine. I’ll be looking forward to your paper piecing instructions for the center medallion since I’m not inclined to hand sew mine. Your mom’s medallion is wonderful… I love how colorful it is!
