My Crafty Crush: hexagons

I know, I know. I am a dork because I like hexagons and they are so trendy. Oh, well. I like them, trendy or not.

I want to point a spotlight on the wonderful talent of some other quilters who have made wonderful things with hexagons….

This beauty was pieced by my mom. Many of you are used to my sharing her quilts here and this is one of her truly great works. Some of the hexagons (look like wheels) are hand pieced, some by machine and then all machine pieced with zillions of set-in seams. In her usual style, it is super scrappy, mixing some 30’s reproductions, solids and modern fabrics.

This is one of her works in progress she brought the last time she visited. Again very scrappy, lots of low-volume prints. Can you see the fabric with the bras in the lower left?

She also pieced the quilt below and then I quilted it and she let me keep it. I love it. It is draped over the back of my sewing chair so I can look at it all the time.

Another all time favorite hexagon quilt is this one, quilted by Judi at Green Fairy. go check it out.

are you back? get up off the floor. The pieced quilt is great by itself, but I just love how Judi quilted the hexagon and triangle shapes into the white space. If you want to be inspired (or just feel really inadequate), Judi’s quilting is where it is at! (peak at her current post to see a fab mini made by my sis, Em, that Judi just quilted)

what are you crushing on right now? a new collection of fabrics? a new project? or something someone else has made that has you swooning??
Leave a comment and tell me so I can enjoy it, too. If you post about it on your blog, be sure and leave the link.

I don’t think hexagons could ever be dorky , they’re such a fun shape with so many possibilities. I nearly fell of my chair when I followed your links to the Green Fairy site, oh my golly such amazing quilts and quilting. I’m not sure what I’m crushing on at the moment… I find I’m looking at neon fabrics a lot. Actually that reminds me of a hexagon quilt,
here’s a link to OhFransson’s Neon Honey Hexagon Quilt.
