Twirling Fans, Twirling Fans QAL

Fan Quilt Along Pattern, part 2

If you are just tuning in, the first segment of this tutorial is published here.

At the end of the first step, you should have fans like the units shown above. Today we will add the center arc shape to complete the fan units.

cut arc pieces (gray floral)

1. use the arc template that you created during preparation for sewing to cut out the fabrics for the arc pieces. Remember that the template DOES NOT include seam allowance on the curved edge. Add 3/8″ to that edge when you cut out your fabric.

2. on your ironing board, lay the arc fabric with wrong side facing up. Place the template you used to cut it out on top of the fabric so that the seam allowance along the arc edge is visible as shown above.
Using the tip of your iron and fingers, carefully fold the seam allowance over the template and press (do not iron a plastic template, use paper or cardboard).

OPTION: sew along the seam allowance with fusible thread, then iron the turned edge. The fusible thread will hold your seam allowance down for when you appliqué.

3. after ironing the seam allowance and removing the template, the piece will look like the photo above.

Prepare white background fabric as instructed in the pattern. Pin the fan in place to the background fabric.

Line up the straight edges of the arc corner with the corner of the background fabric. Make sure the curved edge of the arc completely overlaps the curved portion of the fan. Pin in place.
Applique the fan to the background fabric using desired technique as described in the pattern.

I have made a block following your instructions but have a query about the size of the central square.
Should this be cut smaller as I cannot figure how a straight side of the arc cut at 3″ and finished after sewing at 2¾” can match up with the centre square finishing at 3″. I would really appreciate your comments, thank you!

I love comments! thanks for stopping by.
