Finished! Mini Marcelle Medallion Top

Happy October First! It really feels like Autumn here, which is my favorite time of the year. The leaves are changing and there is a lovely crackle underfoot when I walk with Cleo. I am so looking forward to starting some new quilts in October. I would like to present to you my finished Mini Marcelle Medallion quilt top. It was a goal to finish this in September, and I actually got so charged up, I stayed up late last night to finish the outer border...something I rarely do. The primary fabrics used on this were a couple of Michael Miller...

Quilt in Progress: Mini Marcelle

In my quest to spend July on my Works in Progress, I have made a little progress on my Mini Marcelle Medallion quilt. I have added the brick-like rectangle border and the solid fabric border, which is white with tiny green dots. I am really happy with how this is coming along: the colors are so cheerful and sweet, and there is just something fun about a tiny quilt. At this stage, it's not too tiny anymore, about 27" square. I made a full size version of this popular pattern, you can see it Here. I have said before how much...

Mini Marcelle Medallion: Flying Geese Border

One of the project I worked on last weekend at Camp was my Mini Marcelle Medallion. I finished the tiny flying geese border! Each of these geese finish at 1" x 2", they are so cute. The main group of fabrics I am using are from charm square packs by Michael Miller Fabrics. There are lots of ways to make flying geese blocks and they are a classic in quilting. If you have never made flying geese, it is a good block to add to your repertoire. I'll show you how I do them.First Method:Determining sizeYou can customize your flying...

Weekend Work in Progress: Mini Marcelle

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I was scheduled to teach a class on the Marcelle Medallion at my local quilt shop. I didn't want to make another full size quilt, so I decided to make it in miniature for my class demonstrations.I have made the center star and sawtooth border…all in half the scale of the original. My center star is 8" and those little triangles in the first border are 3/4". How about some cuteness? For fabrics, I used charm squares of 'Happy Tones' prints.at this point, my mini is at 11 1/2" and next...

Finished! Marcelle Medallion Quilt

it is finally finished! I had my Marcelle Medallion quilted professionally, so it took a little bit. I posted about the finished top back in September, but I just go it back and bound! (thanks for the binding help, mom) It now resides at Quilt Beginnings, in Columbus, as the sample for a class I am teaching. If you are in the central Ohio area, I am doing a monthly class (six months starting next Friday, February 21) on making this quilt…consider joining me! This quilt is really fun to make. It is no wonder it's popularity exploded last year. I so...

Medallion QAL: create your paper piecing pattern

We are one week away from our first post on the finished center medallion star! I decided to paper piece mine and one reader expressed interest in doing hers that way, too, so I wanted to write up some guidelines for adapting the pattern to paper piecing, and also show a how-to on the actual piecing.I published a tutorial on paper piecing a compass block Here, if you are interested (skip past the compass pattern specifics to the part about the piecing)Drafting your foundation pattern:1. on graph paper, draw a square that is Half the finished (no seam allowance) size...

Sunday Celebration: Marcelle Medallion

I (finally) finished my Marcelle Medallion quilt top! It seemed like a long haul to get those cross blocks on for the outer border, but (non-quilting) life gets busy sometimes.I love this view of the borders. I intentionally used light fabrics for the brick border, hoping it would contrast with the dark flying geese, but now I think it blends too much with the floral fabric border and is too Mushy. Oh, well, live and learn.I did the brick border differently from the pattern. The instructions to make the brick border like mine are posted here.I do love how...

Medallion Mania

Doggonit.I wanted to have my Marcelle Medallion top finished to post yesterday. Now it is today and it is still not finished.I am still working on the cross blocks for the last border. I like how they are looking, but I just have this little peek to show for my efforts.I am debating about adding another "last" border, maybe to make the dark a wider frame?? I am kind of ready to be done with this one because.....I  have my next medallion quilt waiting to be started! This is called Midnight at the Oasis by Jen Kingwell, and the pattern...

A Sewing Helper and Marcelle Progress

Last weekend, Cleo and I spent our spare time sewing up the flying geese border for Marcelle."I think it needs some black...you know, for contrast""Sewing is hard work"I have really enjoyed the comments on this project so far...it sounds like I may have convinced some of you to make one of these? It has been a fun one to mix in with others. In July, I alternated between this and my blockbuster. Next, I am going to start on my Double Wedding ring for the NY modern quilt guild challenge. So we'll go back and forth a bit in August...
