Quilt in Progress: Polka Dot Bikini, the “mini”

I mentioned last week that I am using my Kona solids bundle from Stash Fabrics to make a small version of my Polka Dot Bikini Quilt. This project has pretty much taken all my sewing time this week, and I am really loving how it is coming along. I initially planned to make it with only the solid fabrics, but just couldn't do it! I had to add some bright prints...and of course the polka dots made sense. I am trying to create a good mix and balance between the dot fabrics and the solids, but keep the overall...

Summer Blockbuster Quilt-Along: A Simple Sampler

It is finally time to make the Summer Blockbuster of 2015! This is the third annual summer quilt-along here at Color Girl, a quilt along for finishing those orphan blocks you might have laying around, or an opportunity to make something new and fresh. This year, I am using all the blocks I made throughout this year in Quilters' Book Club and the Super Simple Sampler series. There are few out there who have made the simple sampler blocks with me, so I hope you will quilt along with me this month and get those blocks finished into a quilt....

Quilters’ Companion: Sparkle Charm Quilt

Almost a year ago, the editor of Quilters' Companion magazine (based in Australia) asked if I would be interested in creating a quilt for their issue on using Pre-Cut Fabrics. I was totally blown away and thrilled at the invitation, so of course I accepted, and this month the special issue was released containing my new pattern, Sparkle. Sparkle uses 5" charm squares, a popular pre-cut widely available from many of the major fabric manufacturers. What I like about these pre-cut packs is that you can get a sample of fabric from an entire collection of prints without breaking...

Aviatrix Quilt: A Checker Border

I have been back at work on my Aviatrix medallion quilt...and challenging my quilt math skills! After the X and Plus block border, my quilt was kind of an odd size (I haven't followed the pattern exactly), so I had to figure out how to bring it up to size for the next border. The next border on the pattern is the cute log cabin blocks, alternating color and white, and I fully planned on doing that....until things spun all out of control! (-: The problem was that I needed more than a narrow stop border to get the quilt...

Quilts: What’s New and Next

Although I haven't quite caught up on all my quilts in progress (that will probably never happen!), I have been having a bit of fun recently with color. Beth, the owner of Stash Fabrics, asked some quilters to create their own bundle of kona cotton solids. Naturally, I was happy to play around with the colors (there are over 300! and Stash carries them all) and came up with this pretty color wheel of 15. There is a neat feature on the Stash fabrics website, the "design wall", which allows you to paste fabrics you like and then see how...

New Pattern Now Available: Gossamer Quilt

The summer heat is here and we are ready to head inside for some quality sewing time: try a new quilting pattern to show off your favorite prints paired with beautiful, vibrant solid colors. Gossamer was originally published in issue 9 of Quilt Now back in March, and was featured as the cover quilt for the "pretty" issue. I used mostly fabrics from the new range of print fabrics by Sharon Holland for Art Gallery Fabrics (also called "Gossamer") and added several coordinating prints from my stash, all from various collections by Art Gallery Fabrics. I also used Hobbs Heirloom batting...

For the Love of Fabric: Happy Home

Earlier this spring, when Art Gallery Fabrics started previewing their new collections for Market in Minneapolis, I knew immediately that I wanted to make a quilt with "Happy Home" by Caroline Hulse (SewCaroline). The colors and prints in this collection are so fresh and bright, and I like the whimsical and hand-drawn look of them: a bit child-like. I was lucky enough to have Art Gallery provide some fabrics for me to make a quilt for a new pattern, and I wanted to share these pretty fabrics as well as some ideas for what you might mix them with from your...

Skopelos Fabric and Pattern Giveaway!

Last month I had the opportunity to sew with this beautiful new fabric collection by Katarina Roccella for Art Gallery Fabrics, Skopelos. For the blog tour to roll out the collection and give some inspiration for using the fabrics, I made a variation on my Jumping Jacks pattern. Read full post, Here. In the original pattern, I used lots of scraps in bright primary colors with black and white as the secondary design. For my quilt with the Skopelos fabric, you can see it looks completely different just by turning the blocks in a different orientation. This is a versatile pattern,...

Finally Finished: Mini Eclipse Quilt

The last couple weeks, I have written about working on this little quilt as my "Quilt in Progress", so I am happy to finally have it finished! This is a miniature (about 30" square) of my original Eclipse Quilt (pattern available Here or on my Craftsy Shop) that was featured in Quilt Now magazine back in December. Honestly, I have so many quilts in progress, and a million more inside my head and sketch book, I don't know what possessed me to re-make this quilt other than that I really love the design. It is a unique way to use...

Quilt Now issue 11, Featuring “Spectrum” Quilt

It seems like so many quilts have come to fruition in the last couple of months! I have had so many new patterns to share with you all at once, but let me assure you that all these are the product of months of sewing and writing...they just seemed to get published back-to-back. When it rains, it pours, right?   I received my copy of issue 11 of Quilt Now Magazine recently and it contains a really simple, but fun to make quilt pattern that I designed and sewed last summer. I wrote about this quilt in a previous post, Here. I...
