Finished Quilt: Modern Rings

She's finished. I have decided to call this quilt pattern, "Hula Girl". It is a modern paper-foundation pieced version of the classic ring quilt. Look for this pattern in my shop  so  you can make your own!  This quilt was pieced by my talented mother, using "low volume" scraps for the background patchwork and solids for the rings. I quilted it on my own sewing machine in a basic grid echoing the squares, and then bound it with scraps in keeping with the top. You can see my original "hula girl" quilt Here. As you would expect from me, its a...

Quilts in Progress: Color, Color, Color!

It is the middle of the week, time to see what we are working on! Starting on the non-quilting front for me: I have become a soccer mom. I spend two nights a week at soccer practice and last weekend was devoted to a tournament. This has been a learning experience, good and bad, for both my son and me. Selfishly, I am sad to miss evening time at home (soccer nights=rush dinner, rush bath, staying up too late), but it is really fun to watch him play and see his bright little pink face come off the field looking...

Jewel Box Quilt Christmas Kit Available

Merry Christmas! I mean, school just started, aren't we all thinking about Christmas? This is when I start thinking about my shopping for Christmas, perhaps it's time to think about sewing for Christmas, too. I wanted to share this "Jewel Box" quilt made by Jane of Quilter's Way, an online fabric and quilting store as well as a physical store in Massachusetts. Jane sells my pdf Color Girl patterns on her website (Here), and has recently made up this sample of the Jewel Box quilt for her shop. I really love it (I think maybe even more than my original!)...

For the Love of Fabric: Cotton + Steel

If you are a selvedge person, have I got the fabric for you! Most quilters have probably heard plenty about the Cotton + Steel collections, which are a new group of designer collections from RJR fabrics. They had huge hype leading up to Spring Market a few months ago and basically dominated social media during the Market. I am going to be brutally honest: when I first saw the collections, I wasn't too excited. I'm not a novelty print quilter, and most of what I saw were things like horses, arrows, buttons, cats and lions....and then I saw their basics...

On the Road: Portland Quilt, inc. MQX Festival

What a thrill! Last week I had the opportunity to go to Portland with my mom, sister, brother and his girlfriend...a road trip to see my quilts displayed at the Quilt! Knit! Stitch! festival by MQX and Quilts, inc. I am so lucky to have such a supportive and fun-loving family (my poor little brother has been dragged to quilt shops and sewing events his whole life and still tolerates us girls!) My Twirling Fans quilt and my Polka Dot Bikini Quilt (both quilted by Jenny of Sew Kind of Wonderful) were invited to participate in a special exhibit on...

Finished Quilt! Hexagon Lone Star

Hooray! I finally have a finish to share. I finished the binding on my hexagon lone star quilt. I went back and forth a bit about how to finish this quilt, but I found this striped fabric in my stash and loved how it pulled all the colors from the quilt together. I was tempted to use a really light fabric for the binding to blend with the white, but I really love how this one frames the quilt so nicely. You can find a tutorial on how I do my binding Here. I am having a girls week away with...

Reader Spotlight: Letha’s Twirling Fans Quilt

Over the last couple of weeks, Letha Gunter has been working on her Twirling Fans quilt. How do I know? because every few days, I have gotten an email with her comments on each of the posts of Quilt-Along. Each one made me smile and it was fun writing back and forth about her sewing, and hear the excitement in her notes as she made progress. When she wrote me last week that she was finished with the top, I asked if she would let me show it here on the blog. One of the things Letha says she likes...

Quilt in Progress: Modern Rings

I am finally getting back to finishing this quilt! I started quilting it in early June, only to have my Sashiko machine malfunction. Now, I am unpicking what I did with the Sashiko machine and starting over with my regular sewing machine. This quilt was pieced by my mom, based on a design I created which is also a variation on my original Modern Wedding Ring quilt. You can see the full top of this quilt Here. There will be  pattern coming to my shop also. How does one decide on a quilting design? For me, it usually comes down...

Where I Sew: Some Crafty Decorating Projects

If you follow my feed on Instagram, you might know that I have been in the process of moving into a new sewing space. I am taking over our old guest bedroom and couldn't be more thrilled for the opportunity to turn it into my little haven. Last weekend I spent lots of time sorting and storing my fabric. This week is all about decorating and that means some projects! For my sewing machine, I am using an old table we used in our dining room in our first couple of pads, and my husband once inherited from his parents....

On (Virtual) Newstands: Quilt Now

It's no secret I like quilting magazines. I like to feature my favorites on this blog now and then. There are so many quilting magazines out there, it's pretty safe to say there is something for everyone. What is rare is finding one that has something for everyone all in the same place. I am really excited to have the first issue of Quilt Now, a brand new magazine from the UK edited by Katy Jones. It is available here in the States in digital form or from Pink Castle Fabrics (I subscribed through Pink Castle). After meeting Katy at...
