Taking it on the Road: the Islands

My family and I just returned from a fantastic trip to the Big Island of Hawaii. It is our favorite place to vacation and this year was really special: my boys went snorkeling for the first time! It is really amazing as a parent when your child reaches a stage to experience something brand new, especially when you can share something you really love and do it together. In the photo above, I am at a small quilt and gift shop in the town of Volcano. We ate lunch there before driving through the national park and looking at the...

On Newsstands: Love, From the U.K.

If you are in the United States, this issue of Love Patchwork and Quilting is still in stores…and it just might be a favorite of mine! I want to tell you about it. If you are not familiar with this title, you simply must check it out. I don't subscribe to quilt magazines, usually just buying the issues that I really like. This one is different. I do subscribe, and I get excited every month it comes. I am in love with this quilt by Camille Roskelly, also shown on the cover, and the pattern includes a mini version, too. It...

For the Love of Fabric: Batik

Jackie at Canton Village Quilts Works is having a sale on her great selection of batik fabrics this weekend! Check out the batik page Here. That got me thinking. Batiks are so unique in quilting, aren't they? it seem that people either love them and use them almost exclusively, or really not at all. I think maybe their potential is under-appreciated in all styles of quilting: Color, Texture, Pattern...Beautiful!     There is no doubt that batiks look great together! I made this bargello quilt about seven years ago. I wanted both the three dimensional look of the bargello design as well as...

Mini Marcelle Medallion: Flying Geese Border

One of the project I worked on last weekend at Camp was my Mini Marcelle Medallion. I finished the tiny flying geese border! Each of these geese finish at 1" x 2", they are so cute. The main group of fabrics I am using are from charm square packs by Michael Miller Fabrics. There are lots of ways to make flying geese blocks and they are a classic in quilting. If you have never made flying geese, it is a good block to add to your repertoire. I'll show you how I do them.First Method:Determining sizeYou can customize your flying...

Quilt Bomb 3

It's that time of the year. Kids are crazy excited because it's sunny outside, the days are long and there is water to play in. Moms are happy to have outdoor playtime, maybe a little anxious at the long days ahead, but happy to relax the schedule a bit.The school year is winding down for my son in second grade, and I wanted to share with you a display in the hallway outside his classroom that I really enjoyed.I think his favorite subject is social studies (other than Phys. Ed.) and this year they were really focused on state...
